Researchers at the University of Toronto have developed a method of loading skin cells and various polymers into 3D printer to create thick layers of skin.</p>
<p>In other research, scientists from the Institute of Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina aim to print skin directly onto burn wounds. Professor James Yoo and his team were highly inspired to develop a portable bioprinting system to help address injuries in the battlefield, where around 30% of injuries involve skin damage.</p>

<p>In one example, surgeon Anthony Atala demonstrated an early-stage experiment at a 2011 TED Talk, where he printed a prototype human kidney.</p>

<p>The world’s first artificial liver is already on its way. A team at Heriot Watt University led by Dr. Will Shu are running experiments with this goal in mind, again using 3D printing in the manufacturing process.</p>

The researchers used a gel to build three types of liver cells and arranged them into the same kind of 3D cell architecture found in a human liver. The company’s ultimate goal is to create human-sized structures suitable for transplant, but they might need more capital.</p>

<p>Medical School students have long used human cadavers in their training for diagnosis, treatment and surgery before they begin practicing with real patients. With improvements in 3D printing technology, realistic <a href="http://on3dprinting.com/2012/04/23/innovative-and-strange-3d-printing-chocolate-stone-candy-organs/">artificial body parts</a> can be produced rather than relying on corpses. The U.S. military is currently evaluating this opportunity.</p>
<blockquote><p>Such artificial body parts would &#8220;ideally not be actual biological tissues,&#8221; but instead would consist of materials that could physically simulate the feel of flesh and bone. Success in printing out entire body part sections containing bone, muscle, skin and blood vessels could lead to lower medical training costs and cut back on the need for animal or human cadavers.</p>
<p>&#8220;If such technology were possible, a wide variety of human anatomy sections could be printed on demand,&#8221; according to a U.S. Defense Health Program solicitation for small business issued on May 11.</p>
<p>The 3D printed artificial body parts would also ideally allow for normal CT or MRI medical scans, so that physicians could practice interpreting the scan images before diving in with scalpels. The U.S. military effort could also presumably benefit American physicians and medical schools back on the home front.</p></blockquote>

<p>3D Printing is mostly known as a method for additive manufacturing of plastic polymer, used for prototyping, creating small tools, and designing works of art. Consumer-ready printers, like <a href="http://www.makerbot.com/" target="_blank">MakerBot</a>, enable anyone to be their own mini manufacturing plant &#8211; of plastic goods. This is about to change.</p>
<p>Innovative as well as strange raw materials are starting to emerge in the 3D printing landscape.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://on3dprinting.com/2012/04/07/a-sweet-alternative-3d-printing-chocolate-for-easter/" target="_blank">Chocolate</a></strong>. The <a href="http://www.chocedge.com/" target="_blank">ChocoEdge</a> printer lets you “melt some chocolate, fill a syringe that is stored in the printer, and get creative printing your chocolate.” Available at retail for $3940.</p>
<p><strong>Sandstone</strong>. D-Shape has a 3D stereolithic printer that can create large-scale structures out of sandstone. &#8221;It prints the structures using artificial sandstone which is sand or mineral dust glued together by an inorganic binder.&#8221; More at <a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/blog/kit-eaton/technomix/rapid-prototyping-gets-serious-fabricates-entire-building" target="_blank">Fast Company</a>.</p>

<p><strong><a href="http://open3dp.me.washington.edu/2011/03/tttt-tttttttt-iced-tea-printing/" target="_blank">Iced Tea</a> and <a href="http://open3dp.me.washington.edu/2011/03/bone-yard-3dp-in-bone/" target="_blank">Bone</a>?</strong> Two entries from Open3DP that make the strange category are iced tea and bone. Both examples have only been shown in the lab and are not commercial yet.</p>
<p><strong>Candy</strong>. <a href="http://www.evilmadscientist.com/article.php/candyfab" target="_blank">CandyFab4000</a> from Evil Mad Scientist. &#8220;Our three dimensional fabricator is now fully operational and we have used it to print several large, low-resolution, objects out of pure sugar.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Organs</strong>. <a href="http://www.wakehealth.edu/WFIRM/" target="_blank">Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine</a> is experimenting with 3D printed organs. While strange, this has huge commercial potential.</p>
