US Government Takes Down 3D Printed Gun Designs

War on 3D Printed Guns

DEFCAD files are being removed from public access at the request of the US Department of Defense Trade Controls. Until further notice, the United States government claims control of the information.”

That’s the notice on Cody Wilson’s DEFCAD website, a self-proclaimed “makeshift response” that was created when MakerBot took 3D printed gun designs off of its marketplace Thingiverse so that Defense Distributed could provide plans to 3D printed guns online.

This comes just days after the launch of the Liberator 3D printed gun.

The announcement of the takedown is trending on Reddit and designs have been replicated to torrent networks.

Streissand effect? This would certainly appear on Wikileaks?

    We live in exciting times.

Soon the technology will exist to 3D print EVERY part of firearms. Bullets with gunpowder and all.

    • Johnny says:

Gunpouder can not be replicated as its the chemical composition of the pouder that makes it explosive. Also bullet casings made of plastic would rupture under the stress of expansion or just melt and the projectile of the actual bullet would lose its shape and airodynamic shape which allowes it to follow a straight trajectory and still have enough force to penetrate. Also not every part of a firearm can be made using plastic as a barrel would soon heat up after a rapid frequency burst so the plastic would have to be extremely heat resistant and any deviations on the straightness of the barrel would mean that the bullet would etch lines into the barrel making it one use. However if there is metal 3d printers then were in with a chance to create firearms.

      • Jarod says:

The barrels are designed to be rapidly replaced, after a few shots. Pop one off, pop another on. There are a couple of parts that are fashioned out of metal from what I’ve seen, but they look relatively easy to make. Of course, this is really an advanced form of zip gun. Anyone can make a firearm, they don’t need a 3d printer for it.

    Very Interesting

CON: The Constitution Re: Right to Bear Arms “shall not be infringed on”
That is – Nothing shall be legislated to keep AMERICANS from having militia-type weapons. There may be an argument for hunting of personal protection weapons – BUT THERE IS NO ROOM FOR ANY MISUNDERSTANDING ON MILITIA-TYPE WEAPONS.

PRO: This is a National Security Issue and a Copyright Infringement Issue.
Americans should have the right to these plans but not other countries.

CON: The Internet as a TRANSPARENT Organization should be free from ALL Government interference.

Why only america, there are tons of other countries? Anyways anyone with knoladge of fire arms and CAD programs wil be able to design this
