TechCrunch TV Takes a Tour of MakerBot with Bre Pettis
TechCrunch writer John Biggs takes a tour of Brooklyn-based MakerBot with founder and CEO Bre Pettis.
It’s been months in the making, but here it is: the first episode of TechCrunch Makers, featuring Bre Pettis of Makerbot. We visited Bre’s downtown Brooklyn factory where he and the rest of team design, build, and ship hundreds of Makerbots a week.
Our goal for this series is to highlight hardware entrepreneurs – folks who are building something cool and making the world a cooler place while doing it. Look for upcoming episodes on distilling in the city, reanimated farms, and Arduino.
Our favorite part of the video is when John Biggs realizes that MakerBot machines are actually assembled onsite, as opposed to some factory in China. In a tongue-and-cheek reference to people buying eggs and not knowing a chicken is involved, Bre responds ”these are my glorious chickens.”

Nano Rubik’s Cube: Shapeways Member 3D Prints Puzzles in Millimeters [Video]

With the announcement of Shapeways’ $6.2 million funding, we thought we would look back at some of the amazing designs their community has produced.
Community member Evgeniy Grigoriev (aka grigorusha) has designed a number of micro-sized twisty puzzles. These are popular puzzles shrunk down to millimeter size, only made possible by 3D printing.
Here is a video of a customer assembling the Evgeniy Grigoriev’s 12mm Rubik’s Cube. You can buy this and some of his other puzzles at his Shapeways shop.
And, for comparison, here is a video of the smallest Rubik’s Cube made without 3D printing, available at http://tonyfisherpuzzles.net.

At the Dutch Electronic Art Festival (DEAF), a workshop was held on 3D printing and textiles, to explore the combination of both techniques. During this 1.5 day workshop participants created many samples of truly integrated ‘fabric 3D prints’.
The Ultimaker team (NL) and the Smart Textiles Design Lab team (SE) were sponsors of this event.
The video below shows the participants crafting the future with 3D printing.
