Objet Showcases Exquisite Examples of Professional 3D Printing Applications at the 3D Print Show

With a goal of extending the awareness of 3D printing, Objet, the innovation leader in 3D printing for rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing, exhibits some stunning examples of real-life professional 3D printing applications at the inaugural 3D Print Show today.

Two pieces from Neri Oxman’s Imaginary Beings: Mythologies of the Not Yet series, recently exhibited at the Centre Pompidou in Paris,  take centre stage on the Objet stand (P19 Level 2, Porter Tun Room). Printed using Objet’s unique Connex multi-material 3D printing technology, Oxman explains why the process was significant in the development of the pieces, “Objet 3D printing technology was extremely important in dreaming up this project. It wasn’t about generating forms and then using 3D printing to print them. It was really about using multi-material technology as an opportunity to think about how to make these ‘contraptions’ or ‘wearable myths’ mythical, and how to actually make them work better as products or objects for the human body.”

Legacy Effects’ Jason Lopes, another Objet technology user, explains how 3D printing is used within the business in two seminars on Saturday 20th October 15:00-16:00 and Sunday 21st October 11:00-12:00. An award winning full service character design, make-up and animatronic studio, Legacy Effects’ work can be seen feature films such as Avatar, Iron Man II, Shutter Island, Alice in Wonderland, and Thor and has been nominated for an Academy Award® for Iron Man. With Objet Eden and Objet Connex multi-material 3D printers, Lopes’ team is able to react to short deadlines, cater for multiple projects and make changes and different versions easily with quick conversion from scan files: “The best thing about 3D printing for me and my team is that our customers and actors can interact and try out the fit of our concept designs. When we produce character suits, creature mock ups and make-up effects, the materials are so durable and workable they can really see how it’s going to work out for them on set.”

Designer Daniel Hilldrup will also feature Objet 3D printed work at the show. ‘Flux, appearing in the 3D Printshow’s art gallery, was produced on an Objet Connex multi-material 3D Printer.

Described by Hilldrup as “a statement on the transference of energy and its transition and total transformation from one physical state and form into another”, Flux depicts black candle wax melting into the liquid base of a candelabra, captured, like a fossil, at a specific moment in time.

MakerBot Presents Groundbreaking 3D Masterpieces from Artist Cosmo Wenman at 3D PrintShow London 2012

MakerBot unveiled the incredible work of California-based artist Cosmo Wenman at the 3D PrintShow London 2012, October 19-21. The work is displayed in the MakerBot booth at the show. The pieces include: Head of a Horse of Selene, Acropolis, Athens, 438-432 BC; Portraits of Alexander the Great: -300, 1440, 1945, Hellenistic Greek 2nd-1st century BC; and Antikythera Mechanism, Hellenistic Greek, 1st century BC.

Cosmo Wenman is a prolific contributor to MakerBot’s Thingiverse website that is home to approximately 25,000 digital designs for real, physical objects. On Thingiverse, Cosmo has charged users to follow his example and capture scans of actual people or notable things in the world (like an asteroid or the deepest spot in the Earth’s ocean). He is on a mission to digitize the world and to challenge notions of materialism; his personal website notes that the “next couple years are going to be a big, exciting mess.”

“Cosmo’s latest work is some of the most compelling I have ever seen done by a MakerBot 3D printer,” said Bre Pettis, MakerBot ceo and founder. “Cosmo’s work calls into question the limitations often attributed to our machines, and they show beyond a shadow of a doubt that MakerBot desktop 3D printers can create pieces of incredible size, form, and beauty.”

These pieces were scanned from originals in the British Museum. Cosmo modeled them to print on a MakerBot Replicator desktop 3D printer in MakerBot PLA Filament. He then treated them with various finishing processes to create remarkably authentic, museum-quality replicas.

The first generation MakerBot Replicator Desktop 3D Printer was named “Best Emerging Tech” at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The MakerBot Replicator 2 was just announced in September. The company has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the Economist, Wired, The Colbert Report, Fast Company, Engadget, Make: Magazine, Rolling Stone, Time, IEEE Spectrum, CNN, Financial Times, NPR, Vogue Italia and many others.

Some of the most forward thinking minds from the worlds of technology, design, art and fashion will come together to showcase truly innovative works that have only been made possible through the medium of 3D print.

3D Printed Bioscope: New Design Reinvents the Old Film Camera

Inspired by an early movie projector of the same name, the Bioscope is a medium to experience memories in relative time. It consists of a hand-held device, to be viewed with one eye, resembling an old film camera.

Simon de Bakker and Jon Stam, who designed and 3D printed their ‘Bioscope’ at i.materialise are pushing the boundaries of photography, film and technology. The Bioscope is a digital movie viewer in the shape of a Fisherprice camera.

Designers often use 3D printing for accessories and interior design, but there is another market that reaches 3D printing more and more: the one with digital gadgets like the Bioscope: you look with your eye through the ‘lens’ and then, by moving the red button forward or backward you can see your home movie frame by frame which creates a very retro like effect.

The Magical Experience – Interview with Jon Stam

“For this project, I wanted to recreate the magical experience of those old projectors but adjusted to our modern times by using movies on USB sticks. The Bioscope is interactive and allows the user to move through time with the turn of the crank. Moving forward and backward, as fast as slow as you want. You’re invited to pause at your favorite moments and reflect. This way people get manual control over digital information and it allows them to transform every viewing into something entirely new and personal.”

Through traditional manufacturing it was hard to bring this idea to life, so Jon Stam and Simon de Bakker decided to try 3D printing: “We were thinking about how we could take old technology and adapt it for the modern world. Going to the traditional manufacturing route of making a mold and going into full production was not only too expensive, but it also made it impossible to customize the Bioscopes the way we wanted.”

“Luckily, there is 3D Printing. By using this technology, we could create the bioscope digitally and together with i.materialise, repair any errors in the file and find the best material and printing technique to bring the bioscope to life in polyamide. Quickly and affordably. Plus, when I am not completely satisfied with how the bioscope feels – not a problem. I change the digital file, contact i.materialise, and presto…a new and improved Bioscope!”

3D4D Challenge Announces $100K Finalists – 3D Printing for Global Good

3D4D Challenge 3D Printing Developing World

In July we wrote about the 3D4D Challenge, a competition offering a $100K prize to the biggest transformational idea that could leverage 3D printing technologies to deliver real social benefits in the developing world.

Seven finalists have been chosen to go through to the Live Final on October 19th in London!

Boris Kogan, Israel/US 

 

Boris’s concept is based on the development of a small scale, easy-to-manufacture and assemble robotic greenhouse which will enable local communities to produce good food with ease, even in the most difficult environmental conditions.

 

Climate Connected Benefit Society, ColaLights - Edmund Bell-King and Cornell Jackson, UK

Ed and Cornell’s project involves the development of Solar lamps created from used plastic Coke bottles using 3D printed ‘bottle caps’ and attachments for the charger, battery and PCB components. These lights will replace expensive and dangerous kerosene ones to use in rural areas throughout India.

 

EN3D Project - JF Brandon, Canada 

JF has developed a simple, 3D printed solar tracker that is more efficient, cheaper and easier to manufacture than existing models, which will provide sustainable solar electricity to local communities.

 

Fripp Design and ResearchTom Fripp and Steve Roberts, UK

 

Tom and Steve are working on an idea to use 3D printing technology to enable the developing world to rapidly manufacture soft tissue prosthesis, at minimal expense.

 

Just 3D Printing - Suchismita, Jayant Pai and Sidhant Pai, India 

The Pai family’s project involves providing young entrepreneurs and students access to 3D printers using material recycled from disused plastic bottles, in order to encourage innovation.

 

Roy Ombatti - University of Nairobi,Kenya

Roy’s idea is based on the need to prevent the problem of foot infections caused by The Jigger Fly, something that is rife in parts of East Africa. Specially designed 3D printed shoes could be produced from recycled plastic to be worn by individuals suffering from foot deformities in order to prevent further deterioration.

 

Tinkher - Brandon Bowman, Matthew Rogge, Luke Iseman and Bethanu Weeks USA 

Tinkher is an amalgamation of two projects submitted to the final with very similar objectives. The project aims to develop an off-grid 3D printing system, which recycles plastic bags to produce tools for local farmers.

 

The international competition attracted a diverse range of entries from around the world – including entries from North and South America, Europe, Asia, and East and West Africa.

Each of the finalists will receive $1000 and access to expert mentors in order to develop their projects in the run up to the competition final, which will take place at this year’s 3D Print Show on Friday 19th October 2012. Finalists will pre-record short video pitches which will be available to view at the show and online so that the general public can vote for their favourite entries. The contestants will then be invited to give live presentations of their projects to selected guests, after which the judging panel will choose a winner.
