Fab Lab of the Week: Collab in New York City [video]

This week’s featured Fab Lab is Collab, a New York City-based think tank and fabrication laboratory.

As co-founders Mark and Adina Levin explain in the video below, Collab is an art and science collaborative. Designers, engineers and scientists share the space to work on their own ideas but also collaborate on projects. If someone has an idea and needs specialized skills, they can tap into the talent pool and combined experience at Collab.

In the 5,500 square foot facility, shared equipment available to members includes 3D printer, laser cutter, woodshop, sewing studio.

Below is a video interview and feature produced by Fast Company.

Last year, Collab supported Maker Faire with a project called Electric Doodle. Kids who were attending Maker Faire could design their own art displays with LEDs and get a real-time print out of their creations.

Fab Lab of the Week: G. Wiz Science Museum in Sarasota, Florida

This week’s featured Fab Lab is the G. Wiz Science Museum in Sarasota, FL.

The Faulhaber Fab Lab was established at G. WIZ in May 2011. There are currently only 150 fabrication labs in the world and Sarasota’s Fab Lab at G. WIZ is the first to appear in the southeastern United States. The Fab Lab concept was originally conceived at MIT by Professor Neil Gershenfeld.

“If you think it, we can create it here in the Fab Lab” says Eric McGrath, foreman at the Faulhaber Fab Lab at the GWIZ Science Museum in Sarasota. The museum’s mission is to serve as a “gateway for lifelong adventures in science,” and was founded in 1990. The Fab Lab at the GWIZ museum came into being through the generous donations of Dr. Fritz Faulhaber who through the Faulhaber Family Foundation donated $400,000 to GWIZ to launch the project. It is a champion of science education not only in Sarasota County, but the entire state of Florida. What defines the fab lab is “personal manufacturing.” It is “custom creation” at its best. Its main purpose is to make one of a kind product rather than mass manufactured products.

Fab Labs and Smart Cities: Barcelona

Fab Lab: Barcelona and Smart Cities: are we seeing societal change by way of democratization of manufacturing?

In an interview with Tomás Diez, director of the Fab Lab Barcelona project, the question was posed:

How can cities solve the need of providing more and more diverse services, in a scenario of cutting budgets, while taking advantage of the opportunities that “fabbing” bring to us? At the Fab City… how do you think that having a neighborhood fab lab would change people’s lives?

The response was quite profound:

This proposal consists on a fab city made up of an interconnected community of neighborhood fab labs. The venues’ goals would be to encourage entrepreneurship and interest in innovation that have already been present in Barcelona throughout centuries. As they see it, bringing factories back to cites will lead us through a new industrial revolution where production methods and social bonds will be transformed.
